Arse.
So yesterday evening the lovely
blackdogdark and I were supposed to be going up into town to Waterstones to the Harry Potter release party event thing. Dressed up (I was going as Bellatrix Lestrange cos that's just about the only one I can get away with, given the long black hair and all) and everything. We missed the last one because Becki had a better offer at the last minute (REM in Hyde Park, so fair enough), and the one before that because it was my friend's wedding. So, this being the last book, we were really looking forward to it.
And then it rained all of yesterday. No matter, I thought, we'll be okay getting back to mine, my route home never floods. Oh, no it doesn't. Except yesterday. It took me three and a half hours to get home, and I had to abandon the car about a mile away and wade through knee-high water (there is only one entrance and exit to the new estate I live on, and I couldn't get to it because all the ways I could access it, and there aren't many, were flooded. What sort of idiot builds a massive housing estate with only one entrance and exit?) and then walk and then cut across some waste ground and through a fence. Mark came and found me, and thank god he did because I think I'd have given up otherwise.
Becki, meanwhile, was a bit behind me, got utterly misdirected and ended up across the other side of town and unable to get back. So she's in a hotel over there somewhere. We are meeting up this morning, with any luck, and going into town if we can get there, picking up our reserved copies of the book, and then crashing out in Starbucks for a bit. Because of course we'd reserved our copies. If we hadn't, we could each have gone to the supermarket nearest us (we are currently each within ten minutes' walk of one) and bought one at midnight. But no.
*So* disappointed. Yes, we are overgrown fangirls, but then you knew that anyway. I just...I mean, of all the days Gloucester has to choose to succumb to the waves, why bloody yesterday when we've actually got something planned for a change, something that's important to us?
And now I'm awake and it's 5.30am and I can't get back to sleep because I keep sneezing (because yes, I think I'm getting a cold, and no, it's not from wading through knee-high floodwater, I was sneezing all yesterday afternoon too). *sigh* I mean, at least the house isn't flooded (unlike some of the new houses we walked past on the way back, which are lower down and closer to a brook), so it could conceivably be a whole lot worse, but... >.< wretched weather. It's supposed to be summer!
So no Harry party for us. Gutted, basically. Please nobody tell me what happens. If anyone wants me today I shall be in Starschmucks, reading. Or on the bus, reading. Or on the sofa, reading. If I ever get into town.
